Hillview Furniture Co. Policies
1 Year Warranty
Hillview Furniture Co. warrants our tables, chairs, benches and other custom pieces against structural and manufacturing defects for one year from the date of delivery or pickup, under normal indoor residential use.
What Is Covered
Defects in materials or workmanship that affect the strength or function of the piece, such as joints that separate, structural cracks, or finish that fails under normal use.
What Is Not Covered
- Natural variation in grain, color, knots and stain, and normal seasonal wood movement (see our Cosmetic Standards)
- Misuse, abuse or neglect, including overloading a piece or standing on it
- Outdoor use, excess moisture, direct heat, or not following our care instructions
- Changes, modifications or repairs made by anyone other than Hillview Furniture Co.
- Accidents, pet damage, normal wear and tear, and events outside our control
- Pieces not purchased directly from Hillview Furniture Co.
How to Make a Claim
Contact us with your name, order details, photos and a short description of the problem. Call or text 715-870-1122 or email Scott@HillviewFurniture.com.
If the issue is covered, we will repair or replace the affected part or piece, at our choice.
Terms
- This warranty covers the original purchaser only and cannot be transferred.
- Repair or replacement is the only remedy. We do not offer refunds.
- The warranty does not cover transportation, delivery or refinishing costs.
- We decide whether a claim is covered, and that decision is final.
- To the fullest extent allowed by law, Hillview Furniture Co. disclaims all other warranties, express or implied, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, and is not liable for incidental or consequential damages.
- This warranty is governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin.
By purchasing from Hillview Furniture Co., you agree to the terms of this warranty.
Cosmetic Standards Agreement
Every piece we make at Hillview Furniture Co. is made to order. You choose the size, style, wood species and color, and we build it by hand from solid hardwood in our Wausau shop. Because of that, no two pieces look exactly the same. That is the nature of real wood, and it is a big part of what makes your piece yours.
Please read this page before ordering. It explains what is normal for solid wood furniture and what we consider a true defect.
Every Piece Is One of a Kind
Wood is a natural material. Every tree grows differently, and every board we cut from it has its own grain, color and character. Photos, renderings and samples on our website, in our catalog and on social media show the style of a piece. They are not an exact preview of the boards that will go into yours.
Natural Characteristics That Are Normal
The following are natural features of solid hardwood. They are not defects and are not grounds for rework:
- Variation in grain pattern, figure and texture from board to board
- Color differences between boards, including lighter sapwood and darker heartwood
- Mineral streaks, pin knots, small sound knots and other natural marks typical of the species
- Slight differences in color and grain between a table, its leaves, benches and other pieces in a set
- Color that changes over time as the wood is exposed to light (cherry and walnut are well known for this)
Stain and Color
Every board takes stain slightly differently. Two boards stained with the same color, at the same time, by the same person can come out a little lighter or darker than each other. This is not something we have control over.
Stain samples and photos are a guide, not an exact match. Screens also display color differently, so what you see online may not match what you see in person. If an exact color match matters to you, talk with us before you order.
Wood Movement
Solid wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity. Wisconsin's humid summers and dry, heated winters make this especially noticeable. Small seasonal changes such as slight gaps at breadboard ends or between boards, or a small amount of cupping that comes and goes with the seasons, are normal and expected. Keeping your home's humidity steady (roughly 35 to 55 percent) helps.
What We Consider a Defect
We stand behind our work. These are examples of true defects that we will make right:
- Joints that separate or loosen under normal use
- Cracks or splits that affect the strength of the piece
- Finish that peels, flakes or bubbles under normal use
- A piece that is noticeably different from the size, style, species or color listed on your written quote
See our 1-Year Limited Warranty and Return Policy for how these are handled.
How to Inspect Your Piece
We judge cosmetic issues the way you will live with the piece: standing at a normal viewing distance (about three feet) in normal room light. Marks that can only be seen up close, at an angle or under a flashlight are considered normal for handmade furniture.
Please look over your piece at delivery or pickup. If you see something that concerns you, contact us within 7 days with photos and we will take a look.
Questions
If you have any questions about wood species, stain or what to expect, ask before you order. You will talk with the people who build your furniture.

Return Policy
Every piece we make is made to order. You choose the size, style, wood species and color, and we build it just for you. Because of that, we cannot resell a finished piece, and our policy is simple.
All Sales Are Final
We do not accept returns or exchanges past the sign-off date, and we do not issue refunds.
Rework, Not Refunds
If something is truly wrong with your piece, we will make it right through repair or rework. Rework applies when:
- The piece has a structural or manufacturing defect (see our 1-Year Limited Warranty), or
- The piece does not match the size, style, species, or color listed on your written quote
Rework does not apply when:
- You change your mind or no longer want the piece
- The piece does not fit your space but was built to the dimensions you approved
- The grain, knots, or color vary naturally, or the stain looks slightly different from a sample, photo or rendering
- Normal seasonal wood movement occurs (see our Cosmetic Standards)
Every board stains slightly differently, and no two pieces look the same. Please understand this before ordering with us. It is not something we have control over.
Deposits and Cancellations
Orders start with a 50% deposit. That deposit buys the lumber for your piece and holds your spot in our build schedule, so it is non-refundable once paid. The remaining balance is due on completion.
Before You Order
Please review your written quote carefully, including dimensions, style, wood species and color. Measure your space and ask us any questions before you pay your deposit. Changes requested after we start building may add cost and time.
Delivery and Pickup
Please inspect your piece at delivery or pickup. If you notice damage or a problem, let us know right away, and no later than 3 days after, with photos. Once a piece is picked up, Hillview Furniture Co. is not responsible for damage that happens during transport.
How to Request Rework
Call or text 715-870-1122 or email Scott@HillviewFurniture.com with your name, order details, photos and a short description. We will review it and get back to you with next steps.
Optional Upgraded Warranty
Want more coverage than our standard 1 year warranty provides? We offer a lifetime warranty on our in-house joinery via a one time payment equal to 10% of your table's cost, which is due on completion of your table.
This warranty provides coverage for failed glue joints beyond the standard 1 year period. The finish, joinery we didn't make ourselves, and other, non-glue joint cracks are not covered by this extended warranty.
The extended warranty is available for all tables and benches.
This extended warranty does not mean that we do anything differently while building your table and it does not apply to our chairs.
